A passion for nursing

Everyone has a passion. For me, it’s nursing. Nursing is my calling, my mission in life.

It is 1983. In a small hospital in rural Mississippi, a brand new nursing graduate reviews her 14 patient assignments. Fairy tales and science fiction often include accounts of positive, mystical forces that help the heroes in these stories struggle with and ultimately triumph over evil. The positive force portrayed in Star Wars films (Lucas 1977, 1980, 1983, 1999, 2002) can serve as an allegory to describe nursing and its future direction. Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi teaches Jedi knights to struggle in their quest for goodness, knowing that the “force” will be with them. <more>
