FROM THE CEOCatch the vision!
This is an especially exciting time of year for the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International—its members and chapters. New honor societies are being chartered as chapters. Existing chapters are expanding through the chapter-at-large process. Induction ceremonies for new members are being held around the world. New chapter leaders are being installed. All of these special events focus on our members and chapters, the essence of what makes the honor society an outstanding, well-recognized organization. Through the support, hard work and actions of members and chapters, we achieve our goals and improve the health of people globally. The first goal identified in our “Vision 2020” (Sigma Theta Tau International, 2007) document is, “The honor society is a valued, relevant and meaningful organization for members and nurses worldwide.” This goal is listed first because it is critical to the success of Sigma Theta Tau International. The honor society must always strive to be valued, relevant and meaningful to each member. This, needless to say, is a challenge because of the diversity of our membership. Gender and the multigenerational demography of our membership are two examples of diversity. Our members include men and women, students, new graduates, experienced nurses and retirees. Each of these groups has a great deal to offer the honor society, but needs and expectations vary. As an international organization, we also have diversity based on race, ethnicity and culture. Each member is valued and important, so we strive to remain relevant and meaningful to everyone. The honor society is working diligently to meet the needs of our diverse membership in several ways, including obtaining information from focus groups, sending out surveys, reviewing literature and critically listening to member feedback. Based on the data we gather, we offer a variety of services, described on our Web site (www.nursingsociety.org), that meet member needs. Career development and leadership programs are available. There are books, continuing education offerings and products for purchase. A variety of other member services and chapter support can also be found. These are but a few examples of content, information and products available on the Web site. In addition, the Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing provides many giving opportunities to promote the mission of the honor society. Whether you are a student, clinician, educator, administrator or retiree, there is something for you. According to feedback from members, networking opportunities are especially valued. Examples include conventions, research congresses, online communities of interest, and online global academic sharing, such as that provided by the International Academic Nursing Alliance (IANA). The possibilities are endless. We cannot, however, be relevant and meaningful without your assistance. Our general e-mail address is stti@stti.iupui.edu. We need to hear about what you value and what is meaningful to you as an honor society member. Which services and products do you value most? Are there other benefits you would like us to consider offering? As you know, available resources are always a factor in determining what can be done. However, the board of directors, staff members and I are committed to the honor society remaining “a valued, relevant and meaningful organization.” With leadership, staff and members working together, I am confident we can realize the first goal in “Vision 2020” long before the year 2020.
