NOTEWORTHY Leaders
of Tobacco-Free Nurses campaign recognized
The Tobacco-Free Nurses Initiative, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, was developed to help nurses stop smoking and to provide tools for nurses to help their patients stop smoking. “Although smoking among nurses has declined, at 15 percent it continues to be higher than among other health professionals,” says Sarna, principal investigator for the research initiative. “For example, only 3 percent of physicians smoke. Smoking among nursing students also continues to be higher than among medical students.” Smoking cessation tools developed by the initiative are available for downloading at no cost at www.tobaccofreenurses.org.
