of Nursing’s Integrated Health Services, has been elected
to the National Academy of Practice in Nursing. The academy
was established in 1981 to advise government on health care

where she is associate dean for academic programs and administration
and the Florence Thelma Hall Distinguished Professor in Nursing. |

Virginia A. Lynch, international
consultant in forensic nursing science at Beth-El College
of Nursing and Health Sciences, at the University of Colorado
in Colorado Springs, has authored and compiled Forensic
Nursing, with special contributions by Janet Barber Duval,
adjunct associate professor at Indiana University School of
Nursing in Indianapolis, Ind. The book is published by Elsevier
Mosby (2006). |

Douglas C. Marshall, community
oncology services coordinator for the Fox Chase Virtua Health
Cancer Program, was honored for his persistence and commitment
to providing cancer prevention, detection and health services
information throughout southern New Jersey by The Prostate
Net in its first annual “In the Know Awards for Eliminating
Health Disparities.” Each year Marshall speaks to approximately
3,000 high school students, conducts between 30 and 40 health
lectures for adult men and women, and facilitates many of
Virtua’s cancer-related support groups. |

Spectrum National Nurse of the Year. For advancing the profession,
Bridget Christina Maybury, patient safety
specialist at Bronx Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bronx,
N.Y.; for clinical care, Gaye Riddick-Burden,
nurse practitioner at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
in Philadelphia, Pa.; for community service, Marilyn
Grace O’Rourke, assistant professor at Rush
University College of Nursing in Chicago; for leadership,
Linda Groah, chief operating officer and
nurse executive at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco; for
mentoring, Deborah Kisner, director of surgical
services at Franklin Square Hospital Center in Baltimore,
Md.; and for teaching, Nancy Calles, international
HIV/AIDS education and research coordinator at Texas Children’s
Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. |

of the Expanded Council for Nursing Practice for the New York
States Nurses Association. |

Michele Mendes, assistant
professor, maternal/child health nursing at Boston College
William F. Connell School of Nursing, is the recipient of
a 2005-06 Teaching, Advising and Mentoring Expense Grant.
These grants may be used for almost any expense related to
the improvement of teaching, advising or mentoring of Boston
College students. |

Vickie Milazzo Institute, founded by legal
consultant and entrepreneur Vickie Milazzo,
received a Telly Award for its entry in the competition’s
film/video category for motivational productions titled “Preview
Your New Life as a CLNC.” The presentation introduces
nurses to the institute’s CLNC certification program
and the benefits of legal nurse consulting. Milazzo’s
latest book, Inside Every Woman: Using the 10 Strengths
You Didn’t Know You Had to Get the Career and Life You
Want Now, was recently released by John Wiley & Sons. |

The Society of Pediatric Nurses has created
the Margaret Shandor Miles Leadership Award in honor of Margaret
Shandor Miles, professor emeritus at the University
of North Carolina School of Nursing and first president of
the Society of Pediatric Nurses. The award honors Miles’
contributions in pediatric nursing education, leadership and
research throughout her 50-year career. Miles will make the
first presentation of the award at the society’s 16th
annual conference in April. |

Ann Minnick has joined Vanderbilt
University School of Nursing as the Julia Eleanor Chenault
Professor of Nursing. Minnick most recently served as associate
dean of research and support services at Rush University College
of Nursing where she was responsible for conducting and promoting
research related to nursing and health care systems. |
